A fresh approach to mindfulness

What is mindfulness meditation?

Mindfulness meditation is a practice of observing our present moment experience. By focusing attention on physical sensations and mental states, we become aware of what is happening in our minds and bodies, rather than operating on autopilot. When practiced regularly, meditation settles and focuses the mind, improving concentration, promoting feelings of calmness and reducing the effects of stress. Importantly, it trains us to relate to our experience with curiosity, allowing us to stay present to ourselves no matter what is happening.

My approach

These wellbeing sessions offer a fresh approach to mindfulness. Designed for people who do more cognitive, sedentary or computer-based work, they place a strong emphasis on the body. Classes focus on developing greater awareness of bodily sensations, in stillness and through movement, as a way of activating the body’s natural relaxation response. Across the sessions, participants are introduced to a variety of mindfulness techniques, allowing them to choose an approach that what works for them. These include:

  • Mindful movement – Gentle, low-impact movements and stretches synchronised with the breath taken from qigong and yoga.
  • Body awareness exercises – Short somatic practices (such as grounding and orienting) that calm the stress response.
  • Traditional meditation – Guided practice of focusing on the sensations of the breath, body, and mental activity through walking and seated practice.

These techniques are presented in a flowing sequence progressing from movement to stillness. This approach allows people to shift gradually from the faster pace of ‘work mode’ to the slower rhythm of ‘rest mode’. Each session includes a short Q&A for participants gain feedback on their practice and deepen their understanding of what they need to feel relaxed and well.
